The short answer
After a single pill, MDMA is detectable for roughly 8 to 24 hours in blood, 12 to 24 hours in oral fluid and 1 to 3 days in urine. With weekly-to-daily use those upper edges move to 48 hours in blood and saliva and about 4 days in urine.
MDMA does not accumulate in fat the way THC does, so the ladder from occasional to heavy use is compressed rather than spread over weeks. What stretches the window instead is the size of the dose — and it does so disproportionately.

The weekend question: a Friday pill and a Monday test
This is the timing most people are actually asking about, so read it straight off the table. Friday around midnight to Monday at 9 a.m. is roughly 57 to 60 hours. A one-off dose gives a urine window of 24 to 72 hours — so Monday morning lands in the upper part of that range, not past it, and a positive is a realistic outcome. Blood and saliva are a different story: in the single-use row both are back under their cutoffs by Saturday evening. That is why a roadside swab and a workplace urine panel can disagree completely about the same weekend.
Why dose moves the MDMA window more than frequency does
Most substances on this site clear on a straight downward curve, and the lever that matters is how many days apart the doses land. MDMA breaks that pattern. The liver enzyme that clears it — CYP2D6 — is inhibited by MDMA itself, so as the dose rises the body loses part of the machinery it needs to get rid of it. Exposure then climbs faster than the dose does: in controlled dosing, a second dose within 24 hours raised the peak by around 29% and total exposure by around 77% (Farré 2004).
In plain terms, a stronger pill lengthens the window disproportionately, because the clearing enzyme saturates (de la Torre 2000). That is why Clearhead scales the MDMA windows by total dose. It does so within limits — MDMA is bound by its own kinetics rather than by a fat reservoir, so dose cannot run the window away — but it is the dominant factor, and frequency only nudges the upper edge.
European pills average 130–180 mg and vary enormously, which makes this more than a theoretical point. The table above is anchored at a 100 mg total dose; a strong pill sits well above that.
Saliva: why roadside swabs catch MDMA well
MDMA concentrates in oral fluid far above plasma — a median of roughly 5.6 times the plasma level, with peak ratios much higher again. The reason is ion trapping: basic drug, acidic saliva. It crosses into saliva easily, picks up a charge there, and cannot cross back out, so it piles up exactly where the swab collects.
That is the opposite of what people expect from a saliva test. For MDMA it is a strong matrix rather than a weak one, which is why oral-fluid roadside screening is used against ecstasy across Europe.
What a urine test looks for — and what a strip can miss
A standard workplace panel reads MDMA plus MDA, one of its metabolites, at 500 ng/mL. A laboratory LC-MS confirmation can additionally read HMMA, which stretches the result towards five or six days — that longer figure is a laboratory scenario, not the screening window in the table.
A cheap "amphetamines" dipstick is widely assumed to catch ecstasy. Cross-reactivity is unreliable and a basic strip can miss MDMA entirely; a dedicated MDMA pad or a laboratory test is what actually flags it. The reverse mistake is just as common — methamphetamine sold as ecstasy converts partly to amphetamine, so one pill can light up lines nobody expected. And since European pills often contain PMA, PMMA, 2C-B or methamphetamine instead, any window estimate for an untested pill is an estimate about a substance you have not confirmed.
Driving: MDMA is a zero-tolerance drug across most of the EU
Unlike THC, where several countries legislate a numeric blood threshold, MDMA falls under zero-tolerance or near-zero-tolerance rules in most European jurisdictions: a confirmed presence in a roadside or blood sample is an offence in itself, with no legal quantity you are allowed to be under. Analytical confirmation limits exist in laboratory protocols, but they are technical thresholds, not permissions. And the timing mismatch cuts both ways. The comedown — broken sleep, low mood, blunted attention — can impair driving well after MDMA has fallen below any cutoff, while a urine test may stay positive for days after all effects have ended. Neither the presence nor the absence of a positive result is a statement about your fitness to drive.
