How long does meth stay in your system?

Crystal, meth, pervitin — one substance, three matrices and one result almost nobody predicts: in daily users the saliva swab runs as long as the urine test.

The short answer

After a single episodic dose, methamphetamine is detectable for roughly 24 to 48 hours in blood, 1 to 3 days in saliva and 1 to 4 days in urine. In genuinely daily or dependent use those windows stretch to 1.5 to 4 days in blood and up to about eight days in both saliva and urine.

Methamphetamine is water-soluble, with a plasma half-life around 10 hours. It does not sit in fat and drip back out for weeks the way THC does, so a one-off dose clears in days. The long tail belongs to daily dosing that keeps topping the body up — which is why “how long does meth stay in your system” has two answers, not one.

Note what the table does not split on. Calling yourself an occasional or a heavy user does not move these numbers; the only distinction that does is whether dosing is genuinely daily. Weekend use, however regular, clears between sessions and reads as the episodic row.

Why meth shows up on both the meth and the amphetamine line

Roughly 7% of a methamphetamine dose appears in the body as amphetamine (Cody 2002). A standard point-of-care panel reads the whole amphetamine class — parent drug plus metabolites — so a single methamphetamine session trips both the mAMP and the AMP line. It is not a contaminated batch and not a false positive: it is the expected metabolic picture.

Timing matters here too. The amphetamine signal is generated from methamphetamine, so it appears later than the parent drug and lingers after it. Other metabolites, such as p-hydroxymethamphetamine, are not modelled by the engine, so they do not appear in the table above.

The saliva surprise: eight days in daily users

Almost everyone assumes urine is always the longest window. In daily methamphetamine use it is not the only one. Oral fluid can stay positive for around eight days — as long as urine did in the same cohort, and far longer than anyone expects from a swab. The figure comes from a detoxification cohort whose prior intake was 0.5 to 2 g a day (Andås 2016); it is a daily-user number and nothing else.

Clearhead models this explicitly for one reason: so a daily user is not falsely reassured. Reading “a couple of days” off a single-dose chart and concluding a swab is done with you is the mistake this row exists to prevent. Between the two extremes, the estimate rises with typical daily intake — only a genuinely heavy daily habit reaches the full eight days, and a small daily dose lands closer to the episodic figures.

Urine pH is the biggest individual lever

Methamphetamine is a weak base, and how much of it is reabsorbed by the kidney depends on how acidic the urine is. The half-life carried in the model is the neutral-pH value of about 10 hours, but the published range runs from roughly 5 to 30 hours once pH is accounted for — the same acid-to-alkaline swing that governs amphetamine. Alkaline urine markedly extends every window in the table.

Two other things shift the curve without rewriting the table. Route changes how fast and how high the peak is — oral bioavailability is about 0.67, while insufflated and smoked routes hit faster and higher — but it does not change the half-life. And CYP2D6 variation governs only minor metabolic branches, including the meth-to-amphetamine step; it is not the main clearance route, so a CYP2D6 minority runs somewhat higher and longer levels rather than a different window.

Roadside saliva screens and driving

European roadside testing runs on oral fluid, which is precisely why the eight-day figure matters outside a laboratory. The forensic oral-fluid cutoff used in the DRUID work is 25 ng/mL, against a 50 ng/mL SAMHSA screening threshold — a technical analytical limit, not a permission. Amphetamines are handled under zero-tolerance or near-zero-tolerance rules in most European jurisdictions: a confirmed presence is the offence in itself. And the two timelines diverge in both directions. The comedown — sleep debt, poor attention, irritability — can impair driving long after methamphetamine has fallen below any cutoff, while a swab or a urine test can stay positive days after every subjective effect has ended. Neither a positive nor a negative result is a statement about your fitness to drive.
